The top cosmetic surgery procedures amongst men

More men are choosing cosmetic surgery than ever before as they embrace it as the new norm.

In an economy driven by tech and social media, youthful looks are more important than ever before, studies repeatedly confirm that refined, physically attractive men are more likely to succeed in their workplace.

Cosmetic surgery procedures for men has tripled in the last 20 years. Worldwide over 3.3 million cosmetic surgery procedures were performed for men in 2016.  Men accounted for 13.8% of total cosmetic patients. The top five cosmetic procedures requested by men are hair transplant, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, liposuction and gynecomastia. An estimated 30 billion US dollars was spent by men worldwide on cosmetic surgeries in 2016.

1. Hair transplant
Hair transplant is the fastest growing cosmetic surgery amongst men. In 2016 over half a million procedures were performed worldwide. In the USA alone over 100,000 procedures were performed.

This is one of the only clinically proven, long-term options addressing male pattern baldness which affects more than 50% of men by the age of 50. There are also extremely effective FDA approved medicines, finasteride and minoxidil for hair loss prevention. Regenerative medicine can also play a key role in preventing future hair loss. There are two primary techniques of hair transplant — FUE (follicular unit extraction) and FUT (follicular unit extraction).

Both procedures aim to get the same results at the end but are fundamentally very different types of surgery.

During an FUE hair transplant, doctors remove hair follicles one by one from a donor area (such as the back or sides of your scalp), and then transplant this hair to the balding area.

The second option, FUT, is also known as the ‘strip method.’ The patient is anesthetised, and a doctor removes strips of tissue from the donor area, and, once extracted, the donor strip is cut into individual follicular units. The doctor then makes tiny holes in the scalp, where the follicular unit grafts are carefully placed.

FUE has become the procedure of choice by patients worldwide as the strip procedure is now outdated. FUE also takes significantly less time to heal than FUT and causes less noticeable scarring.

2. Blepharoplasty
Commonly known as eyelid rejuvenation, the primary benefits of this surgery is the removal of droopy skin, from under the eyes and fewer fine lines, which in turn helps you look younger. Also, extra skin removal on the upper eyelids improves your peripheral vision.

Scarring is relatively minimal and leaves little evidence behind, making eyelid surgery more of an attractive option.

3. Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty helps men look better and feel more confident by changing the size and shape of their nose. During rhinoplasty, surgeons make their incisions either inside of the nose or on the strip of tissue between the nostrils before reshaping the inner structure of the nose. Sometimes cartilage taken from an ear or rib is used to help give a nose its new shape.

4. Liposuction
This procedure involves removing excess fat deposits and creating new body contours. During a liposuction procedure, the surgeon will make tiny incisions in the desired areas and insert a small tube called a cannula, which is used to dislodge fatty tissue. Once the fat is loose, the surgeon extracts the fat using a surgical vacuum.

5. Male breast reduction
This the most effective known treatment for gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts. This cosmetic surgery procedure removes excess fat and glandular tissue to restore a flatter, firmer and more masculine contour to the chest.

The procedure involves a small incision on each side of the chest. Through these incisions, your cosmetic surgeon will remove excess fat and/or glandular tissue, at the same time sculpting a new chest contour that looks natural to your body. Sometimes extra skin removal is required.

Other popular cosmetic surgery procedures are a face or neck lift and tummy tucks. Apart from choosing the cosmetic surgery, non-surgical cosmetic enhancement procedures are even more on the rise amongst the men. The top non-surgical cosmetic procedures for men are botulinum toxin (soft tissue fillers), photo-rejuvenation and laser hair removal.
