Based on the book by Arthur Laurents, the story follows two people that are forbidden from falling in love, as they are from two rival gangs with different backgrounds, the ‘Jets’ and the ‘Sharks’. The show explores how the two lovers try to overcome all the obstacles in their path in the Upper East Side, to be together, and is inspired by one of the biggest romantic stories, William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The entire production is directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, with music composed by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics arranged by Stephen Sondheim. Running since 2003, the musical has been to 28 countries, and seen by over three million people.
