Facebook Takes Down An Online Scam Using Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's Name

UAE residents have been warned by the Abu Dhabi Media Office not to be tricked by a scam in which fraudsters claim His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces had started a Bitcoin trading platform and anyone could join it by investing near to Dhs 1,000 and start to earn money and become rich in seven days.

In a statement issued by the Abu Dhabi Media Office, the authorities have urged people to remain vigilant of such online scams, especially when it comes to transferring money online. The public have been urged to cross check authenticity of campaigns that are run online and on social media asking for money.

The statement issued by the Abu Dhabi Media Office clarified, “Authorised communications for Abu Dhabi, its leaders and its government are shared through ADMO channels @admediaoffice and mediaoffice.abudhabi.”

Post investigations, it was found out that the fake scam page was run from Ukraine and Argentina. Facebook has already taken down the page.

The fake post included the picture of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed and a fake quote saying “my way of giving back to the people”.

Even the author of the article was fake. The picture included in the post is of Timothy Seppala, a United States based freelance journalist, who has no connection with the scam and who confirmed his picture is being used without his permission.
