Top 10 Ways to Getting Rid of Heartburn
Updated on 03 October 2016

You know that burning sensation you get in your stomach and chest? Or that nasty taste at the back of your throat? That is heartburn. No, your heart is not literally burning and actually has nothing to do with the heart. Heartburn occurs when acid from the stomach goes back up the throat. So yeah, acid is literally burning you from the inside.

  • Eating too much spicy food – People have different tolerances for spicy food.
  • Eating too much fatty food – Oil and cholesterol are more difficult for the body to digest.
  • Overeating and eating quickly – You know those days where you’re so hungry that you just eat everything and instantly regret it later? Yeah, your stomach has a limited amount of space. Chew your food!
  • Underlying condition – Certain medical conditions can trigger heartburn so be sure to get regular check-ups with your doctor.
  • Stress, depression, anxiety – psychological issues affect our nervous system which can trigger acid production.
  • Too much caffeine and or alcohol – caffeine is a stimulant that speeds up your systems and alcohol cannot be digested like food.

  1. Eat Fennel Seeds – Fennel is known to have a neutralising effect against spicy food and can help reduce nausea. Just roast and grind the seeds, mix into a glass of water and drink twice a day.
  2. Drink Peppermint Tea – Peppermint has a cooling effect which can soothe the digestive system. Prepare the tea bag in a cup of warm water and let it steep for about 3 – 5 minutes. After, take out the bag and wait for the tea to cool and drink it in small, slow sips.
  3. Drink Homemade Ginger Tea – Ginger is good for speeding up digestion to help food move from the stomach to the large intestines. Grate some fresh ginger into a glass of warm water, squeeze a bit of lemon juice, and add some drops of honey and drink.
  4. Drink Apple Cider Vinegar – This kind of vinegar has been known to give a number of health benefits for skin and hair but it’s also good to smoothen out digestion. Mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into a cup of water, add some drops of honey and drink about three to four times a day.
  5. Frequently take small sips of warm water – Drinking water can help smooth things along but opt for warm water as cold can constrict the process. Also take small sips as chugging too much water can actually make you feel worse.
  6. Eat Something Soft and Mild – When you’re having heartburn the last thing you feel like doing is eating but you can’t just starve yourself until the feeling goes away. Try soup, avoid fried and spicy food, oatmeal, fresh vegetables and fruits, but avoid citrus.
  7. Avoid Vices – You already know smoking and alcohol are bad for you but if you’re having heartburn these vices will only make you feel worse.
  8. Chin Up & avoid lying down – Hunching over and lying down will cause the food in your stomach to press harder forcing acid back up. Always keep yourself elevated.
  9. Eat Yoghurt – Yoghurt is loaded with probiotics such as lactobacilli or bifdobacilli. This is essentially good bacteria you need to help improve digestion.
  10. Take Medications – If worse comes to worse or if you need a quick fix you can take some antacids which can neutralise stomach acid.

If you don’t get any relief from these methods then it would be best to go consult with a doctor. There have been some cases where people confuse the symptoms of heart attack with heartburn because the pain in the chest can feel similar. So, to be safe rather than an emergency case, get yourself a check-up.
