Why is Oral Health Important for Men?
Updated on 21 March 2016

For some reason, men tend to ignore both their physical and oral health much more than women. In general, we tend to visit the dentist usually only when a problem arises, meaning it can be years between visits.

You need to consider if you are in the high risk category:

  • Do you use tobacco? Men are affected twice as much as women for oral cancers. If you use tobacco, it is important to see your dentist frequently for cleanings as well as for oral cancer screenings.
  • Do you take medications? Men are more likely to have the symptom of dry mouth as they are more likely than women to be taking medications for heart and/or blood pressure problems. Saliva can help to reduce the bacteria found in your mouth so it is important for keeping teeth and gums healthy.

I highly encourage you to not only brush and floss daily, but to see your dentist and/or hygienist regularly especially if you are at higher risk for periodontal disease or oral cancer.

With thanks to Dr Hubert de Grully, Specialist Orthodontist.
