Whitening gels contain an active whitening ingredient (either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide) that penetrates your enamel to get to discoloured molecules. Oxygen molecules from the whitening agents react with the discoloured molecules in your teeth, breaking the bonds that hold them together. The oxygen molecules spread, whitening the entire tooth. As a result, you are left with a brighter, whiter smile without damaging your tooth structure.

As with everything else, teeth whitening is not suitable for everyone. Your dentist will initially assess your teeth and gums and then determine if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening treatment. Any cavities should be filled first and gum disease should be treated before the whitening process.
