A split-second is all it takes. Just a momentary lapse in concentration can result in a terrifying collision. It needn’t be your fault, as no one can predict it, yet you need to ensure that all steps are taken to protect you, your family, and all passengers within your vehicle. One of these steps is to ensure your children understand and respect the rules of the road; getting those all-important safety messages engrained into their behaviour from an early age will not only help keep them safe while young, but also as they grow up and one day as they become motorists themselves.
The latest phase of BMW Group Middle East’s ‘Stay Alert. Stay Alive.’ road safety campaign aims to do just that. Together with its local importers AGMC and Abu Dhabi Motors, it has teamed up with Ciel Events for the second year running to educate UAE school children on the importance of road safety to ensure that they are aware of their responsibilities as pedestrians, passengers and future drivers to ensure safer roads for the future. Since 2015, My First License - I Know My Road Rules a unique, hands-on learning programme, has educated 8,000 children aged six to nine years old in 20 schools in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
To encourage parents to get involved in the conversation, here are top ten road safety tips that every mum and dad should teach their child.
1. Buckle up, every time.
2. Remember to look both ways when crossing the street.
3. Always wear a helmet when cycling, especially when near a busy road.
4. Always get out of a car on the pavement side.
5. Respect speed limits.
6. Never run a red signal at traffic lights.
7. Do not use a mobile phone while behind the wheel of a car - it’s distracting.
8. Know the local traffic laws before getting behind the wheel of a car.
9. Use your side and rear view mirrors to anticipate what other people on the road are doing.
10. Use car seats when travelling with small children. These should be fitted properly and checked every trip.
