Listen to your face

The occasional pimple on the face is no cause for concern, but if you notice recurring outbreaks on certain areas of your face, your body may be trying to tell you something. The science of face mapping was first used by the ancient Chinese to explain how certain parts of the face are connected to other areas of the body. Here is how to decode breakouts in basic areas on the face:

Forehead (Digestive System)

Breakouts on the forehead may be a sign that your digestive system is not happy. Stay away from processed and junk food as these only make it easier for your pores to become clogged. Step up your water intake to flush out those toxins. Breakouts in this area also may be sign of sleep deprivation and stress. Make sure to get 7-8 hours of sleep every night and practice relaxation techniques.

Between the eyes (Liver)

Give your liver a hand by cutting out alcohol and greasy food from your diet. This is also the zone where food allergies tend to show up first. Some of the best foods to cleanse your liver include garlic, grapefruit, green tea, carrots, beets, leafy green vegetables, lemons and limes.

Temples and ears (Kidneys)

Any area around the ears is directly linked to the kidneys. Breakouts in this area are often related to dehydration and a need for cleansing. Drink lots of water and eat cooling foods such as watermelon and cucumbers to wash out those toxins. Cut down on caffeinated beverages as they only cause further dehydration.

Nose (Heart)

Recurring breakouts on your nose may be a sign that your heart is working harder than it should. Check your blood pressure and Vitamin B levels. Cut down on meat, salt, spicy or pungent foods. Besides this, try to lower your cholesterol by replacing "bad fats" with "good fats" such as Omegas 3 and 6 found in flax seed, nuts, fish and avocados.

Cheeks (Respiratory System)

Smoking or allergies may be the reasons behind breakouts in this area. If neither of these is the issue, don't let your body overheat by eating more cooling foods. Also, keep the body more alkaline by avoiding foods that make the body acidic (meat, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, sugar) and adding more alkalising foods like green veggies and wheatgrass juice. Breakouts in this area may also be a sign of food intolerance. Avoid certain foods for a month that, in the past, gave you facial problems and see if there is any improvement.

Chin (Hormones)

This is the signature zone for stress and hormonal changes. You can decrease their effect by getting adequate sleep, drinking enough water, eating leafy veggies and keeping skin scrupulously clean. Also, breakouts in this area indicate when you are ovulating (and on which side). Hormonal imbalances take time to resolve, so do not expect to see improvements immediately.
